Those three numbers describe the shape a fitted cover has to wrap. A soft tailor's tape, a flat surface and two minutes are enough. The small details, where the cushion is widest, whether it tapers, and how much the filling compresses, turn a rough guess into a clean fit.
The three measurements
Use a flexible cloth tape. Rest the cushion on a table or firm seat so it keeps its natural shape, and do not flatten it or pull the tape tight enough to compress the filling. Record them in the same order every time so width and depth never get reversed.

Step 1: remove and identify each cushion
Take the loose cushion off the sofa. If several look similar, label them Left, Centre and Right before measuring, sofas that appear symmetrical often have small differences between end and centre cushions. Measure every distinct cushion at least once.
Step 2: measure the full width
Run the tape across the widest point, from one side seam to the other, straight and level. Include the filled curve of the edge but do not add extra for piping. For a tapered or T-shaped cushion, record both the widest and narrowest points and compare the shape with the product description.
Step 3: measure depth and thickness
Turn the tape ninety degrees and measure front seam to back seam across the top. Seat cushions are often deeper than they look because part sits under the backrest, so measure the complete removable cushion. Then measure thickness vertically at the fullest point. Two cushions can share a width and depth yet need very different amounts of stretch around the sides.
Seat and back cushions differ
Seat cushions are broad, deep and firm. Back cushions may be taller, softer or rounded. Measure them as separate families. For a mixed set, keep a short list, for example: Left seat, Centre seat, Right seat, and Back cushions, each as width by depth by thickness. For a back cushion, the vertical face is usually called height rather than depth.
