How to Fit a Stretch Sofa Cover: 5 Steps for a Smooth, Snug Look

Compact sage-grey stretch cover fitted continuously over a straight sofa

How do you fit a stretch sofa cover? Find the centre, drape the fabric evenly over the back and arms, pull the elastic edge under the base, then tuck the slack into the gaps in small, even amounts. Work symmetrically, sit on it once to settle the fabric, then smooth the front line. Five calm minutes is enough.

A stretch sofa cover looks best when the fabric is distributed before it is tucked. There is no complicated technique and no need to pull as hard as possible. The aim is not to erase every natural fold; it is to create an even line that stays comfortable when the sofa is used.

The 5 steps at a glance

Step What you do Why it matters
1. Centre it Find front, back and middle Balances fabric on both sides
2. Drape it Fall over back, then arms Spreads the stretch evenly
3. Anchor it Pull elastic edge under the base Holds the overall position
4. Shape it Smooth arms and front corners Follows the sofa's real shape
5. Tuck and finish Tuck slack, then level the line Creates the clean, snug look

Before you begin

Check that you have the correct size before stretching the cover fully into place. The cover should correspond to the complete arm-to-arm measurement of one sofa section. For an L-shape, use two covers. For a U-shape, use three.

Remove loose throws and decorative cushions, but leave the sofa's normal seat and back cushions where they belong unless the product instructions say otherwise. Fit the cover to the sofa as it is actually used.

If you are still choosing a size, pause here and use the Covaba size guide or our guide on how to measure a sofa for a cover.

Step 1: Find the front, back and centre

Open the cover fully rather than trying to fit it straight from a folded bundle. Identify its front and back from the seams and elastic edge. Place the centre of the cover over the centre of the sofa back.

Starting in the middle keeps the amount of fabric balanced on both sides. If you begin from one arm, it is easy to reach the opposite side with too little material left.

Step 2: Drape it over the back and arms

Let the fabric fall over the back first, then guide it over each arm. Use open hands and move the material rather than pulling one narrow point. The stretch should feel even across the surface.

At this stage the cover will look loose. That is normal. Do not begin tucking until the back, arms and front edge all have enough fabric to reach their final positions.

Step 3: Pull the elastic edge around the base

Work around the sofa and draw the elastic edge beneath the base wherever it can sit securely. Begin at the back corners, move to the front corners, then settle the middle.

The elastic holds the overall position. If one side keeps lifting, release it and redistribute a little fabric from the opposite side instead of forcing it down.

Step 4: Shape the arms and front corners

Smooth the cover from the top of each arm towards the outside edge. Follow the existing shape rather than trying to turn a rounded arm into a square one. At the front corners, make one clean fold and guide any excess towards the gap beside the seat.

Work symmetrically: left arm, right arm, left corner, right corner. Alternating sides prevents the cover from slowly rotating across the sofa.

Step 5: Tuck in small amounts, then finish the lines

Press the loose fabric into the gaps between the seat, back and arms. Tuck a little at a time along the full length. One deep tuck in the middle creates tension; several shallow, even tucks create a cleaner fit.

Sit down once, stand up and look again. The first use settles the fabric into the real pressure points. Then stand back and check that the front edge is level, the arm seams sit in similar positions and the fabric is not being pulled diagonally. Move remaining fullness towards natural breaks: beneath the seat, beside an arm or at the back corner.

These are the covers Covaba customers reach for most. Each comes in all four sizes, so you pick your seater count, then the fabric you like. A snug two-way stretch fits closely and tucks cleanly.

A grippy, non-slip style such as the Non-Slip Plain Stretch cover in Pearl White makes fitting easier and stays put, while a snug two-way stretch like the Smooth Compact cover in Ink Black suits smaller, straight-frame sofas.

How to fit an L-shape sofa cover

Fit an L-shape one section at a time. Begin with the longer or main section and complete its basic fit before moving to the return. The two covers should meet cleanly at the inner corner without one being stretched across the join.

  1. Fit the first cover to the main section.
  2. Keep its corner edge close to the join.
  3. Fit the second cover from the outer arm towards the corner.
  4. Tuck both covers independently at the inner join.

This separate-section method allows each part to move naturally and makes future washing simpler. Not sure which shape you have? See our guide on how to choose a sofa cover by shape.

How to fit a U-shape sofa cover

Start with the centre section, then fit the left and right returns. Completing the centre first establishes both inner corners and prevents the side covers from pulling the whole arrangement out of line.

Measure and fit each section independently even when the two returns look identical. Modular sofas often hide small differences that become obvious only when the fabric is under tension.

If the cover looks loose or slips

A loose finish usually comes from one of three things: the size is too generous, too much fabric has collected in one place, or the base edge has not been settled evenly. Release the nearest corner, smooth the fabric across a wider area and tuck again in smaller amounts.

If the cover gradually moves during use, our guide on how to stop a sofa cover from slipping or looking baggy explains the longer-term adjustments.

After the first day

Expect one small adjustment after the sofa has been sat on properly. Stretch fabric relaxes into the shape beneath it. Smooth the main surfaces, renew the shallow tucks and leave the cover to settle. When it is time to clean it, follow the care label and read our 30°C washing guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to remove the seat cushions first?

For a one-piece stretch cover, normally leave the cushions in their usual position and fit the cover over the complete sofa. Follow any product-specific instructions shown on the page.

Why does my cover look baggy at the front?

Excess fabric has probably gathered in one area. Smooth it sideways across the sofa, then move it into the gaps beside and behind the seat in several shallow tucks.

Can one cover fit an entire L-shaped sofa?

No. Use two covers, one for each straight section. This produces a cleaner fit and allows each part to move independently.

Which section should I fit first on a U-shaped sofa?

Fit the centre section first, followed by the two returns. This establishes both inner corners before the sides are aligned.

How long does it take to fit a stretch sofa cover?

A calm first fit takes only a few minutes. Expect one small adjustment after the first day, then occasional smoothing with normal use.
